Aqua Design; cover, cost and conditions
Aqua Design, now trading as Aquadesign, is based in Oraison in Haute-Provence in southern France and describes itself as an inflatable and whitewater specialist since 1988. It builds rafts for commercial river trips, inflatable canoes and kayaks, and more recently stand up paddle boards; its current K-Air kayaks are made from Hypalon. Names tell you the job: Raft for crewed river boats, Canoe for open canoes, K-Air and Sea K-Air for kayaks, followed by the length in centimetres.
Our model records list 24 Aqua Design models, all inflatables, with model years from 1999 to 2006 and none still in production. Lengths range from 2.4 to 6.5 metres, with half of them between 3.4 and 4.6 metres. The Raft Pro Advantage line has seven sizes from 2.9 to 5.2 metres and the Raft Silver Cloud line six from 3.75 to 6.5 metres. The canoes, Explorer II, Clipper, Trek-Pro, Canoe 4 Seats and Voyager, run from 3.45 to 4.55 metres, while the K-Air Kid, 260, 300 and 380 and the Sea K-Air 250 and 300 cover 2.4 to 3.8 metres.
These boats are paddled on rivers, run through rapids and dragged over gravel, then rolled up and carried in a car. What keeps them valuable is the fabric: tubes that hold pressure, intact seams and valves, and floors without abrasion. Rafts from outfitters see far more use than private canoes, which shows in their condition.
