Arksunds; cover, cost and conditions
The Amigo yachts were built on Öckerö, an island in the skerries off Gothenburg. The yard was Arne Arksunds Bådvarv AB, a small Swedish builder also known as Amigovarvet. Carl Andersson drew the lines, and the first boat, the Amigo 27, appeared in 1973. Hull and deck are glassfibre, and on the Amigo 33 the yard fitted out the interior in mahogany. What gives an Amigo away is the long keel with a rudder hung on the transom, a layout that shaped many Scandinavian cruising boats of the period. The Amigo 27 carries a fractional sloop rig, with the forestay meeting the mast some way below the masthead.
Our model records list four designs from the yard: one sailing boat and three sailing yachts. The Amigo 23 is the smallest at 6.8 metres and is listed as a sailing boat from 1976 to 1982. The Amigo 27 measures 7.8 metres and runs from 1974 to 1983. The Amigo 40 comes in at 9.35 metres between 1978 and 1989, and the Amigo 33 at 9 metres from 1982 to 1990. So the number in the name is no length in feet: the Amigo 40 stays under ten metres and is only a little longer than the Amigo 33. Taken together the entries span the build years 1974 to 1990, and none reaches the recent build years. Every Amigo on the water today is a used boat.
A long keel with a transom-hung rudder is simple and robust, but it pays to look closely at a boat of this age. The rudder fittings and pintles carry the full load of the steering and wear over the decades. On a glassfibre hull from the seventies or eighties, a moisture reading and a check for osmosis blisters below the waterline tell a lot. Mahogany joinery holds varnish well, yet water stains around hatches and ports point to leaking deck fittings. Standing rigging of unknown age is usually renewed after purchase. Owners like these boats for coastal cruising and longer passages, where the steady tracking of a long keel is welcome.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

For the Amigo 23 by Arksunds series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
