Asmus Werft; cover, cost and conditions
The Asmus yard came from Glückstadt on the Elbe. Its founder, Willy Asmus, was a master carpenter who already knew glass reinforced plastic because his workshop moulded refrigerator doors from it. That knowledge produced some of the first series built plastic yachts in Germany, the Hanseats. Asmus, a keen sailor, drew the design in his spare time, based on a home built cruiser with which he had won races on the Elbe, and the new boat turned heads with its speed at Kiel Week.
Our model records list the Hanseat 37 A twice; leaving out the duplicate there are 17 Asmus designs, 16 sailing yachts and one dinghy, the Hanseaten-Jolle. Recorded build years run from 1962 (Hanseat 69) to 1993. The Hanseat 70 comes in four versions, 70, 70 B, 70 B II and 70 MK-III, plus the 79 B. The larger yachts are the Hanseat 33, 35, 35 MS, 37, 37 A, 38, 40 and 42, alongside the Kommodore and Pinguin. Sizes run from the 6.4 metre dinghy and 7.9 metre Pinguin to the 12.75 metre Hanseat 42.
Every Hanseat afloat is now over thirty years old and many are past fifty. At that age the rigging, keel bolts and rudder bearings deserve a proper check before each season. A winter ashore in a shed keeps the deck gear and the gelcoat in good order.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
