Astilleros Brisa is a Catalan yard that built cruising yachts in Barcelona. The design of the Brisa 40 came from the Spanish naval architects Echenique & Angoso, while the interior was fitted out by the Belliure yard, which worked in teak. Hull and joinery therefore come from two different houses. A Brisa is recognised by its broad, heavy keel and by the wooden joinery below deck. Sales descriptions stress a design aimed at sailing in open water and a boat that copes well when the weather turns rough.

The number in each name is roughly the length in feet. Teak joinery ages well when it is ventilated, but soft spots around hatches and portlights point to old leaks. Standing rigging that has not been renewed in the last ten years or so will need attention soon, and the engine hours and service record matter as much as the sails. A survey before purchase is sensible on any Brisa, since each boat has been maintained differently over thirty years.
