Aubin; cover, cost and conditions
Chantier Aubin was a yard at Trentemoult on the banks of the Loire, run by the brothers Marcel, André and Paul Aubin. Its name is tied to designer Philippe Harlé, who drew the Muscadet in 1963 at a time when other yards would not build it. Aubin switched to plywood and moved from one-off building to series work, turning out up to 55 boats a year. The hard chine Muscadet was built around 700 times, most with a fixed keel and about 50 with a centreboard. Every model carries the name of a French drink.
Our model records list five Aubin designs, four sailing boats and one sailing yacht. The 6.4 m Muscadet has the earliest build year, 1963, and runs to 1979. Then come the Cognac at 7.35 m (1967 to 1979), the Tequila at 7.2 m (1968 to 1980) and the Javelot, the smallest at 5.03 m (1968 to 1976). The yacht is the Armagnac at 8.45 m, recorded from 1967 to 1982. Lengths span 5.03 to 8.45 m.
A plywood boat lives by its paint and glue lines. Keep water out of the end grain, check the chines and the keel joint, and give the hull a dry, ventilated winter. The smaller Aubins tow easily and dry out happily on tidal moorings, which is why so many still sail the Channel and Atlantic coasts.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Tequila, Cognac, Muscadet by Aubin and further series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
