Austral Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Austral Yachts is a South Australian yard founded in 1972 by Adrian and Sue Keough. It began with trailer sailers, yachts that tow behind the family car, and later added keelboats, some grown out of its own trailable designs and some drawn from scratch. In the 1990s it teamed up with designer Scott Jutson for the Austral Clubman 8, the Super Clubman 30 and the Clubman 36. The yard also builds the Farr 42, a race boat from the Farr office. The Austral name in front of each model and the boats' roots in Australian club racing make them easy to place.
Our records list five Austral models, all filed as sailing yachts: Clubman 8, Clubman Super 30, Clubman 36, Farr 42 and Noelex. The data begin with build year 2010; the Noelex runs to 2018, the other four into the latest build years. Lengths step up from 7.77 metres for the Noelex to 8.15 metres (Clubman 8), 9.5 metres (Clubman Super 30), 11 metres (Clubman 36) and 12.75 metres for the Farr 42.
The smaller boats are made for the trailer: rig and unrig drills, a good mast crutch and a ramp you know well make every outing easier. The Clubman 36 and Farr 42 are berth boats that tend to spend weekends on the race course, so sails, running rigging and the keel bolts deserve a regular look. In Europe these yachts are rare, which makes a complete file on rig, sails and equipment useful for any owner.
