Avionautica Rio is the original name of the yard now known as Rio Yachts. Luigi Scarani and his wife Anna founded it in 1961 on Lake Iseo in northern Italy, after a honeymoon on the French Riviera had given them the idea. The word Avionautica points to the early days, when the young company also worked on gliders. Through the sixties the lakeside yard turned out mahogany runabouts with Chris Craft and Rolls-Royce engines, many of them named after South American rivers such as the Colorado or the Paraná. In the seventies it moved from wood to ABS plastic and towards series production. Since 2000 the founders' son Piergiorgio Scarani has run the business as Rio Yachts.
Our model records list three designs, all entered as motor yachts, and their names simply state the length. The Rio Ottometri measures 8.3 metres, the Rio Diecimetri 10.1 metres and the Rio 13 Metri 13 metres. The two smaller boats both start in 1965; the Ottometri runs until 1973 and the Diecimetri until 1974. The Rio 13 Metri followed in 1967 and is listed up to 1976. None of the three continues into recent build years, so the records span roughly one decade from the mid sixties to the mid seventies, the very years in which the yard changed from mahogany to plastic.
Every one of these boats is now around half a century old, and its condition says far more than the name on the transom. A survey before purchase should look closely at the hull, at shaft and rudder bearings and at the engine beds, because original machinery has often been replaced over the decades. Records of earlier refits are worth asking for, together with photographs from previous owners. A boat that has spent its life in fresh water ages differently from one kept on a salt water mooring, so the history of where it lay matters. Original fittings, badges and nameplates are part of the character and can be hard to find again.
