Behind Backman stands the Swedish designer Hans Backman. The name became known with the Backman 21, a sportsboat that takes technology from the Mini Transat class, the small offshore racers sailed single-handed across the Atlantic, and puts it on a boat for round-the-buoys racing. The 21 has a canting keel, a daggerboard, twin kick-up rudders, an articulating bowsprit and an asymmetric spinnaker. It is built in epoxy with glass and carbon, and the mast is carbon too. The boat was conceived as a one-design and as an easy-to-handle club racer, and according to Yachting World the build was taken on by Ovington Boats.

The Backman 21 measures 6.6 metres and is listed for build years 2002 to 2015; the Backman 31 reaches 9.15 metres and runs from 2004 to 2015. Neither reaches into the most recent build years. According to test figures the 21 weighs only 550 kilograms on a beam of 2.4 metres, closer to a large dinghy than to a conventional keelboat. For the larger 31 we have no description beyond our model records; it extends the range by more than two and a half metres. Both boats come from the same period and appear side by side for about a decade.
A canting keel adds systems that a fixed fin does not have. On a used Backman 21, check the keel pivot, the canting mechanism and its control lines for wear and play, and look at the hull around the keel box for cracks. Carbon masts should be inspected for impact damage, especially at the spreaders and the heel. Twin kick-up rudders need their stocks and fittings checked after every season of racing.
