Worth knowing
Barrow Boat Co.; cover, cost and conditions
The Barrow Boat Company is based at Loddon near Norwich in Norfolk. It designs and builds wooden tenders and small sailing dinghies from six to twelve feet, supplied either complete or as kits for home building. The name comes from a neat detail: a small wheel is fitted to the boat and the oars slot through holes in the transom, where they act like the handles of a wheelbarrow. That way the tender can be pushed across a pontoon, a beach or a lawn without a trolley. A documented example from 2003 shows the construction: clinker planking in marine plywood glued with epoxy, no frames and no metal fastenings, varnished mahogany transom and thwarts, and a standing lug rig.
Our model records list three designs, all entered as small sailing boats. The Barrowboat Mini is the smallest at 1.85 metres, the Barrowboat Maxi measures 2.4 metres and the Barrow Boat 8 comes to 2.41 metres, very close to eight feet. All three start in 1985. The Mini and the Maxi are listed until 1992, the Barrow Boat 8 until 1996, and none of them reaches into the most recent build years. It is a compact family of tenders that differ mainly in length and all stay below two and a half metres.
Glued clinker plywood is light and stiff, but it relies on its varnish and paint. Every season the laps, the transom and the area around the wheel and oar holes deserve a close look, because that is where water finds its way into end grain. Scratches from beaching should be touched up before winter rather than after. On a used boat it is worth checking whether the epoxy joints are sound and whether the plywood has delaminated anywhere, especially low down near the keel band. Spars and the lug sail are simple to maintain. Kept under a tarpaulin or indoors, a boat like this can stay in use for decades.
