BAT is an Italian brand of inflatable boats. The weight of the range sits with boats without a rigid hull, that is the classic inflatable with a slatted floor or an inflatable keel tube, alongside a few rigid inflatables. You recognise them by the long evenly running tubes with tapered ends, the flat built up floor and the very plain finish; on the larger models the console and bench are fitted rather than moulded in. The type has a practical advantage: a boat without a rigid hull folds down into a car boot or a cockpit locker.
Our model records list 71 BAT models, 64 of them soft inflatables and seven rigid inflatables. Recorded build years run from 1984 to 2013. Sixty series are recorded, 53 of them without a rigid hull. Among them are the Pacific range with the 590 SL, the Big Cayman 510, the Cruising 850, the Diving 750 and 850, the Ultimate 880 and the 745 Artik with its fixed forward section. From the early years come the animal named models BAT 2 Albatro, BAT 3 Murmel, BAT 5 Baltic and BAT 6 Grifo. Lengths run from 2 to 10.6 metres, half the models between 3.5 and 5.5 metres.
On an inflatable without a rigid hull the boat is the material. There is no gelcoat to absorb a scrape and no hull to hold a seam: the tube ages through sunlight, abrasion and the fabric itself giving up, and that is what sets the value. It is also why the engine matters so much here, since on a four metre boat the outboard is often worth more than the boat under it.
