Bates Wharf Marine; cover, cost and conditions

The name leads back to the Bates family of Thames boatbuilders. W. Bates worked at Chertsey in Surrey, Bates Wharf is still a place name on the river, and boats of the marque change hands today through Bates Wharf Marine Sales. The yard began with a series of classic wooden designs, very few of which survive, and later moved to glassfibre. From that period come the Starcraft cabin cruisers of 25 to 45 feet and the Astral 810. Bates boats are river and canal cruisers with a full-length superstructure. The Astral 810 sleeps six: a forward saloon that turns into a double berth, a dinette with galley amidships and a separate aft cabin with two berths. A handful of Bates boats still cruise the Norfolk Broads.

Our model records hold one design under this name: the Bates 810, listed as a motor yacht of 8.1 metres built from 1976 to 1983. On the used market she is known as the Astral 810, a glassfibre cabin cruiser of about 27 feet with a beam of roughly 2.9 metres. The entry does not reach into recent build years, so even the youngest boats on the list are more than forty years old. The larger Starcraft models from 8.2 to 13.7 metres are not in our records, nor are the wooden boats of the early years. For a buyer, the build year and the equipment list say more than the model name, since four decades of owners leave very different boats behind.

A cruiser from the seventies rewards a patient survey. Glassfibre of that age is usually sound, but look for osmosis blisters below the waterline, soft spots in the deck around stanchions and cleats, and crazing in the gelcoat. Window seals and the joint between hull and superstructure are where old river cruisers tend to let in water. Ask about the engine history, since many boats of this era have been repowered at least once, and check the condition of the fuel tank and the wiring. Life on rivers and canals means locks, tight moorings and the odd brush with a lock wall, so rubbing strakes and fendering tell a story of their own.
