Bege Werf; cover, cost and conditions

Bege boats come from Bootcentrum Geertsma in Grou, in the north of the Netherlands. The yard builds steel cruisers between eight and 15 metres, each fitted out to the owner's wishes, so few are identical. Its lines are OK, AK, Salon and Cabrio, using Dutch shorthand: OK means an open aft cockpit, AK an aft cabin. The Patrouille draws only 85 centimetres and is certified for category B, and the Allrounder 42 was drawn with designer Willem Nieland. Most names give the length in centimetres, as with the 1030, 1200 or 1350.

Our records hold 17 Bege models, all motor yachts. Four carry the OK suffix, two AK, three are called Patrouille and four Tigo, plus the Allrounder 42, Cabrio, Peddler 9.50 and Salon. The oldest is the 950 OK, built from 1998 to 2004; the other lines start between 2016 and 2018, and 15 of them run into the latest model years. Lengths go from 9.5 metres (950 OK, Peddler 9.50) to 13.5 metres (1350 Patrouille), with eight models at 10.5 metres or less.

A steel hull shrugs off the knocks of lock walls and canal banks, but it rewards steady attention to paint and anodes, especially below the waterline and in the bilge. With its shallow draught the Patrouille opens up Frisian lakes and narrow canals, while the larger Tigo and Allrounder models suit longer runs along the coast. Most owners keep their Bege in a marina berth through the season and lift it out for the winter ashore.
