Bell Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Bell Marine is a Greek builder whose Apache boats differ from a conventional RIB in one important way. The Apache is a complete glassfibre shell, and its glassfibre tubes carry small inflatable sections inside. From the quayside it looks like a RIB; underneath it is closer to a composite boat with a tube profile. The hull development that began at Bell Marine, together with powerboat racing from 2006, later passed to Rock Marine, a Greek maker of walkaround boats that has been part of the Hull Works Group since 2019 and now builds the Rock models with stepped deep V hulls and outboard power.

Our model records list eight designs, all of them rigid inflatables. Six belong to the Apache range: the Apache 18 at 5.3 metres, the Apache 22 and Apache 23 in both Cabin and Open form, and the Apache 26 Cabin at 7.85 metres. The Apache 18, both 22s and the 26 Cabin are listed from 2004, the two 23s from 2014. Above them sit the RIB Rock 36 from 2013 and the RIB Rock 30 from 2014, at 9.95 and 9.35 metres. Every entry ends with build year 2021, so no line reaches the latest years in our records. Five of the eight boats stay under seven metres, while the two Rock models sit well above.

Because the Apache tubes are glassfibre with small inflatable chambers inside, they do not sag like fabric tubes, but the chambers themselves age. On a used boat, ask when they were last checked and look closely at the joint between tube and hull for cracks. The Rock models carry big outboards and console electronics, so the transom, steering and wiring deserve careful attention. Boats from 2004 have more than twenty summers of sun behind them; chalky gelcoat and fine crazing around fittings are normal, delamination is not. The smaller Apache models trail easily, which makes the road trailer part of any inspection.
