Berckemeyer Yacht Design; cover, cost and conditions
Berckemeyer Yacht Design is a German design office for sailing yachts, led by designer Martin Menzner. It is known for rugged aluminium cruising yachts built to its drawings by selected partner yards in Germany, often with a layout shaped around the owner. The name is also linked to designer Oswald Berckemeyer, who drew the Gitana 43 as a fast, easily handled ocean cruiser for a young family. The designs are recognisable by their line names Cape, Bristol, Gitana, Arctic, Classic and Dash, and newer types put BM in front of the number, as in the BM53 Cape. Because they were built at different yards, two yachts of the same design can differ a good deal in fit-out.
Our model records list 19 designs: 17 sailing yachts and the Dash 37 and Dash 39 catamarans. Cape is the broadest line with eight types, followed by four Bristol, three Gitana, the Arctic 39 B and the Classic 44. The Gitana 38 is listed from 1959 and the Gitana 43 from 1977 to 1983, sixteen types fall between 1994 and 2008, and the BM53 Cape runs from 2013 to 2020. Lengths range from the 9.62 metre Bristol 31 to the 16.34 metre Gitana 54. Five designs stay under 11 metres, seven sit between 11.15 and 11.98 metres, and seven reach 13 metres or more, including the 15.98 metre BM53 Cape.
An aluminium cruising yacht is made for long passages, often far beyond home waters, and for anchorages without a marina in sight. Aluminium hulls want attention to paint, anodes and any contact with other metals, and a careful look after each season in salt water pays off. Owners who sail far plan their haul out around the sailing calendar rather than the other way round.
