Worth knowing
Berckemeyer Yacht Design; cover, cost and conditions
Berckemeyer Yacht Design is listed with 19 models, mostly sailing yachts, plus two sailing catamarans. The designs include the Cape 34, 39 C, 43 F and 54 A, the BM 53 Cape, the Bristol 31 and 35, the Gitana 38 and 54, the Arctic 39 B, the Classic 44 and the Dash 39 catamaran. Build years run from 1959 to 2020, lengths from 9.6 to 16.3 m.
A design office supplies the drawings; the building is done at various yards or by the owner. That is the decisive point for insurance: two yachts to the same design can differ considerably in construction, material and fit out. So it is not the model name that counts here but evidence about the individual ship, best provided through a survey and an agreed fixed value.
NAMMERT insures yachts built to these designs regardless of build year and of who built them, home builds included. What is needed is information on the building yard or builder, material, length and engine. You can calculate the premium for liability and hull cover in the online calculator in about 5 minutes.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
My yacht was home built to a Berckemeyer design. Is that possible?
Yes, home builds can be insured. What is needed is information on material and construction plus a value you can document, usually through a survey or a build record with invoices and photographs.
Why is the model name not enough?
Because the same design may be built in steel, aluminium or composite, and the fit out varies from ship to ship. For premium and cover the individual boat counts, not the drawing.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part, and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
