Bic Sport; cover, cost and conditions
Bic Sport grew out of the BIC group, the company known for ballpoint pens and lighters. Bruno Bich, from the founding family, set it up in 1979 with a simple aim: use the group's skill with plastics to make sailboards that were tough and affordable. Headquarters and development sit in Vannes in Brittany, with the factory in the Prat industrial zone. Windsurfing came first; kayaks followed in 2001, the O'pen Bic children's dinghy later on and stand-up paddleboards in 2010. The Sportyak, a small tender, had been part of the range even earlier. In 2019 the business was sold to the Estonian company Tahe Outdoors, and a large share of production has stayed in France.
Our model records hold four entries, and they show how wide the brand reaches. The O'pen Bic is listed as a sailing dinghy, 2.75 metres long and built from 2004 to 2022. The Techno 293 One Design is a windsurf board of 2.93 metres, recorded from 2006 to 2013; one design means every board in the class is identical. The other two are listed simply as boats: the Sportyak 213 Fishing and the Sportyak 245, both from 2016 and both still running into the most recent build years. No length is recorded for either Sportyak. So two of the four designs belong to current production, and nothing in the list is longer than three metres.
Small plastic boats are easy to live with, but they are not maintenance free. A plastic hull shrugs off knocks on the beach, yet sunlight fades it and makes it brittle over the years, so boats kept outside are better stored in the shade or under a tarpaulin. When buying a used O'pen Bic, check the mast step, the rudder fittings and the centreboard for cracks and chips. A second-hand Techno 293 should be checked for soft spots on the deck and for dings that let water into the core. Sportyaks often serve as tenders or as fishing boats on lakes and get dragged up beaches, so look underneath for scuffs worn thin. Club fleets mean many O'pen Bics are sailed hard, and plenty change hands as children outgrow them.
