Biscay Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
The Biscay 36 is an English glassfibre cruising yacht drawn by Alan F. Hill. Building was shared between two firms: Robert Ives Ltd produced the hull and deck mouldings, while Falmouth Boat Construction in Cornwall fitted the boats out and finished them. Hill saw the design as a glassfibre reading of a traditional wooden yacht and aimed it at the qualities many cruising sailors rank above speed: an easy motion at sea, a boat that holds her course, and a rig that is simple to handle yet powerful. You know one by the long keel with a transom-hung rudder, the heavy displacement for her length and, in most cases, the ketch rig with two masts, though some were rigged as sloops.
Our model records list exactly one design under Biscay Yachts, the Biscay 36, entered as a sailing yacht. The recorded build years run from 1972 to 1993 and the length is 10.94 metres, just over 36 feet. No line reaches into recent build years, so every boat of the brand is now more than three decades old. Anyone looking for a Biscay 36 is buying a boat with a past, often from British waters and often after several owners. The differences between individual boats lie less in the design than in the fit-out, the rig and how carefully each one has been looked after over the years.
A heavy long-keeler like this rewards a careful inspection before purchase. Check the keel bolts or encapsulated ballast, the rudder hangings on the transom and the chainplates for both masts, since a ketch carries more standing rigging than a sloop of the same size. Teak decks on older boats can hide soft patches in the core beneath, and original engines may be close to the end of their working life. Many of these yachts have been fitted out for ocean passages with self-steering gear, extra tankage and heavy ground tackle, so look closely at how that kit was installed and maintained. A survey out of the water is time well spent with any yacht of this age.
