BK Marin (Becker 22) AB is a Swedish yard founded by Bengt Karlsson. Its Mamba yachts were drawn by more than one hand: the Mamba 31 is credited to Harry Becker, Rolf Magnusson and Karlsson himself. Becker was a Swedish designer and builder who made his name with a long run of 22 and 30 square metre racing yachts, and who later set up a new boatbuilding shop with his son Jan, also a designer. The Becker 27 carries his name. The Mamba 31 is a masthead sloop in glassfibre with a fin keel and a rudder hung on a skeg, a layout shared by many cruising yachts of the period. The type name on the hull usually tells you more than the lines do.

Our model records hold five BK Marin designs: three sailing yachts and two entries filed as sailing boats. Build years run from 1971 to 1989, and none of the lines reaches the recent build years. The Becker 27 opens the list in 1971 at 8.12 metres and runs until 1985. The Becker 22, listed from 1974 to 1981, is the smallest at 6.5 metres. The Mamba 31 and Mamba 34 both start in 1974; the 34 is the largest boat at 10.16 metres and was built until 1989. The mamba 311 shares the 9.35 metre length of the Mamba 31 and is listed from 1976 to 1989. Three of the five designs measure more than nine metres.

Any Mamba or Becker on the market today is at least 35 years old, so condition matters far more than the year on the papers. Look at the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull, and at the skeg and rudder bearings, which carry a lot of load on a boat laid out like this. Where a deck is cored, wet patches can hide around fittings and stanchion bases; a moisture meter tells more than a glossy photo. Standing rigging of unknown age should be replaced before the first long trip. Many boats of this generation have spent decades with one owner, so a folder of receipts and a record of work done is well worth asking for.
