Black Pepper; cover, cost and conditions
Black Pepper Yachts is based in Nantes, close to the French Atlantic coast, and builds its sailing yachts entirely in carbon fibre, several of them as semi-custom boats. Besides the monohulls of the Code range, the yard lists catamarans, tenders and IMOCA ocean racers among its own builds. The hull of the Code 0.1 was drawn by Marc Lombard Yacht Design. The Code 1 is a yacht of about 40 feet whose underwater shape takes its cue from recent Class 40 racing hulls, offered as Cruiser, as Racer and as Foiler with retractable foils. What sets the boats apart is the all-carbon build combined with a look the yard itself calls vintage style.
Our model records list seven designs: five sailing yachts from the Code range and two motorboats that serve as tenders. The Code # opens the line at 8.2 metres from 2016. A year later came the Code 0.1 at 9.99 metres, the Code 1 at 12 metres, the Code 2 at 17.5 metres and the Code 3 at 23.5 metres, the largest boat of the brand. The two tenders measure 7.05 and 5.05 metres, the smaller Tender 17 appearing from 2018. All seven entries run into the most recent build years, so the whole range is current. The largest boat is well over four times the length of the smallest.
Carbon hulls and spars are stiff and light, but they hide damage well. After a hard grounding or a collision with floating debris, a proper inspection, ideally with tap testing or ultrasound, tells more than a glance at the gelcoat. Foils, their cases and bearings on the Foiler version deserve attention at every haul out. On a used Code yacht it pays to check the age of the running rigging and sails, the state of the bowsprit fittings and the history of any racing campaigns. The tenders, being small motorboats, mainly need a look at engine hours and service records.
