Boat Building Academy Lyme Regis; cover, cost and conditions

The Boat Building Academy is not a production yard but a school, set on Monmouth Beach in Lyme Regis, Dorset, in a building that once belonged to a Royal Air Force base. It opened in 1997. The heart of its teaching is a 40-week course in wooden boatbuilding to the standards of the trade, alongside short courses of two to five days on subjects such as restoration, GRP repair, oar making and traditional sailmaking. The boats that come out of the workshop are launched from the beach at Lyme Regis.

Our model records hold a single design under this name: the Islay Skiff, listed as an open sailing boat of 5 metres with build years from 2002 to 2008, so it does not reach the most recent build years. The design comes from the Selway Fisher drawing office. One example shows what such a boat looks like: Martin McMahon built an Islay Skiff at the Academy and launched it in June 2010. It measured 16 feet 5 inches and was strip planked in red cedar. Since every skiff from the school is built one at a time by hand, each one is a boat of its own.

A strip planked cedar hull lives on its finish. Epoxy and varnish keep water out of the timber, so any crack, dent or bare patch deserves attention before it lets moisture in. Kept under a canvas or indoors, a small skiff keeps its looks for many years. When buying second hand, look along the planking for dark staining, press around the stem and transom for soft spots, and check the centreboard case and the rudder fittings. Ask who built the boat and when: with a school boat the builder is known, and photos from the build are often kept.
