Bonin is an Italian sailing boat yard whose range grew out of a close partnership with the naval architect Mario Cossutti and his studio, Cossutti Yacht Design. The first fruit of that partnership was the Bonin 34 in 2001, and the Bonin 31 design followed in 2007. These are boats drawn for speed under sail. The Bonin 31 is described as a sports boat with a vertical stem, an open transom and a deckhouse that narrows towards the stern. She carries a fractional rig, with the forestay meeting the mast below the masthead, and a bulb keel. Construction is glassfibre, with a displacement of around three tonnes and a draught of almost two metres.

The Bonin 31 is entered as a sailing boat of 9.4 metres, with our entries starting in 2017 even though the design itself is older. The Bonin 358 is a sailing yacht of 10.9 metres, listed from 2016. The Bonin 34 that began the work with Cossutti does not appear as a separate line in our data. The range is therefore short and young: two boats between just over 30 and almost 36 feet, both still in production, so new hulls join the used market alongside the older ones.
A boat built for performance rewards careful upkeep. Running rigging, halyards and sheets on a fractional rig work hard, and the spreaders and shroud fittings deserve a close look each season. The bulb keel and its bolts should be checked after any hard grounding, and with nearly two metres of draught that can happen sooner than on a family cruiser. When looking at a used Bonin, ask about racing history, the age of the sails and the state of the keel joint. Open transoms make boarding from the water easy, but they also mean the cockpit drains straight aft, so scuppers and lockers should stay clear.
