Bootsbau Rügen GmbH; cover, cost and conditions
Bootsbau Rügen is based in Lauterbach on the island of Rügen and traces its roots to a 19th century business that built fishing boats. It switched early to glassfibre and added yachts to its output. Wolfgang Lenz first showed the Vilm at an exhibition in London in 1967, and the boat went on to become an export success for East Germany. Vilm Yachts was set up in Lauterbach in 1990 and combined traditional joinery with modern boatbuilding. Its last model was the Vilm 115, developed from the Dehler 36 hull lines by Judel/Vrolijk, with a high coaming, a deckhouse drawn far aft, a solid hardtop and mahogany joinery below. The yard filed for insolvency under self-administration in 2024. A sheltered cockpit and wood below decks make a Vilm easy to recognise.
Our model records list 15 designs, every one of them a sailing yacht. The earliest entry is the Vilm I from 1966, listed in two versions. The Vilm 106 follows from 1972, the Vilm 116 from 1973 and the Vilm II from 1976, joined in 1990 by a ketch version. There are two deck saloon variants, the Vilm 112 DS from 1990 and the Vilm 41 DS from 2008. Only the Vilm 115 runs into the most recent build years. Lengths sit close together, from 10.1 metres for the Vilm 34 and Vilm 101 to 12.45 metres for the Vilm 41 CR and 41 DS. Five designs stay under eleven metres, six fall between eleven and twelve, and four measure twelve metres or more.
Many Vilms afloat today are decades old, and the way they have been looked after tells you more than the build year. On an older boat, have a surveyor check the hull for moisture and osmosis, look at the keel bolts and chainplates, and inspect the standing rigging, which careful owners replace at regular intervals. The wooden interior is part of the appeal but needs dry bilges and good ventilation to stay sound. The ketch spreads its sail area over two masts, which means two sets of rigging to check. The protected cockpit makes these boats well suited to cruising the Baltic and the North Sea. Since the yard has been through insolvency, it is worth asking the seller about drawings and spare parts.

As the Vilm 115 by Bootsbau Rügen GmbH series is still in production,
parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the Vilm 37, Vilm 41 CR, Vilm 41 DS by Bootsbau Rügen GmbH and 7 more series the market value
and the replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Vilm 112 DS, Vilm 106, Vilm II Ketch by Bootsbau Rügen GmbH and 1 more series there is no
list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Vilm 115, Vilm 37, Vilm 41 CR by Bootsbau Rügen GmbH and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
