Bringsvaerd; cover, cost and conditions

Bringsværd is a Norwegian boatyard associated with Børge Bringsværd. In Norway's sailing history it is remembered above all for its work with the designer Jan Herman Linge, whose boats can be recognised by the ending -ling in their names. In the winter of 1967/68 the plug and moulds for Linge's Yngling were made at Bringsværd's yard, the first seven boats sailed in the 1968 season, and orders soon followed. The Yngling became an international class in 1979 and an Olympic class in 2004. The same partnership produced the Smiling, a cruising boat offered in 28 and 29 foot versions and described in Norwegian listings as safe, seaworthy and easy to handle alone.

Our model records list two designs from the yard, both of them sailing boats. The BB 17 appears at 7.3 metres with build years from 1965 to 1973. The Smiling, a sailing yacht of 8.7 metres, is recorded from 1972 to 1981, so the two lines briefly overlap. Only 1.4 metres separate the smaller boat from the larger. Neither design continues into recent build years, and the last entries date from 1981. Both therefore belong to the years around the Yngling, and any boat offered for sale today has spent more than four decades afloat, very often in Scandinavian waters.

A Scandinavian cruiser of this age repays a patient inspection. Start with the rig: standing rigging, chainplates and the mast step carry the loads of every season the boat has sailed. Keel bolts and the area where keel meets hull deserve a close look, as do deck fittings that may have been rebedded more than once. On a Smiling the auxiliary engine, its mountings and the cooling system tell a lot about how the boat has been looked after. Many of these boats spent their lives in Norwegian and Swedish waters with short summers and long lay-ups ashore, which is why a full record of past work is worth asking for.

What this means for the cover

For the Smiling and BB 17 by Bringsvaerd series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Smiling by Bringsvaerd series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

For the BB 17 by Bringsvaerd series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
