Contest Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Contest builds blue-water yachts between 12 and 20 metres in the Netherlands using a semi-custom process, vacuum-infusion hulls, solid wood interiors, every yacht fitted out to the customer's wishes. These are yachts for circumnavigation, and the sums insured are often at the upper end of what the calculator covers.

With semi-custom yachts the valuation is individual: the fit-out makes the difference, not the hull length. A valuation report that records hull, rig, engine, electronics and fit-out separately is the basis of the agreed value. Anyone planning a circumnavigation should talk to us beforehand; the Worldwide cruising range applies without restriction, but salvage cover and the deductible are part of the reality of a passage in the South Pacific.

What this means for the cover

As the Contest 42CS / 49CS, Contest 55CS / 67CS,

Contest 50 / 57 by Contest and 2 more series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Contest 30 / 33 (classic) by Contest series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Contest 36 by Contest series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Contest 42CS / 49CS, Contest 55CS / 67CS,

Contest 30 / 33 (classic) by Contest and further series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
