Brooke Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Brooke Marine was a shipbuilding firm in Lowestoft on the Suffolk coast, known over the years also as J.W. Brooke & Co. and Brooke Yachts. It began in 1874 as a foundry set up by John Walter Brooke and moved into boatbuilding and shipbuilding in the early 1900s; by 1911 the marine side had its own works in Lowestoft. The yard turned out boats and small ships for private and commercial owners, fishing trawlers, yachts and minor warships for the Royal Navy, the Royal Navy of Oman and other fleets. The first Al Said, once the royal yacht of Oman, was built here, and so was the powerboat Virgin Atlantic Challenger II. The yard closed in 1992.
Our model records hold just two Brooke Marine designs, and they sit at opposite ends of the scale. The Geomonic is a sailing boat of 5.85 metres listed for build years 1965 to 1972. The Ocean Pirate is a motor yacht of 11.4 metres, recorded from 1967 to 1975. More than five and a half metres separate the two, and their build years overlap from 1967 to 1972. Neither line runs into recent build years, so every example still afloat is around half a century old and has often passed through several owners.
A boat from this era rewards a careful survey before purchase. On a motor yacht like the Ocean Pirate, look closely at engine beds, shafts and stern gear, check the fuel and exhaust lines, and ask for the history of any engine replacement. Deck fittings and windows on boats of this age often need resealing. On the little Geomonic, the standing rigging, the chainplates and the attachment of keel or centreboard deserve attention, as does the trailer if the boat travels by road. Original drawings and papers are worth gathering wherever an owner has kept them, because parts for a yard that closed in 1992 have to be found or made one by one.
