BSI Marine; cover, cost and conditions
BSI Marine Sweden AB was a Swedish yard in Lysekil on the west coast that built large cruising yachts to designs by Farr Yacht Design of Annapolis. The boats were sold through Boat Sales International in the UK. The signature type is the pilothouse yacht: the Farr 50 PH, drawn in 1996, carries a cutter rig with a Selden mast, and the designers' notes describe it as large enough for a couple to live aboard in shoreside comfort while staying practical and safe offshore. The Farr 63 PH had been designed two years earlier, in 1994. On a pontoon these yachts are easy to pick out by their raised deck saloon.
Our model records hold seven sailing yachts, all carrying the Farr name and all between 15.53 and 19.4 metres. The Farr 50 is the earliest entry, from 1988, and runs until 2009. Then come the Farr 63 at 19.35 metres from 1996 and the Farr 56 at 17.6 metres and the Farr 60 at 18.36 metres, both from 1997, the latter ending in 2005. The three-digit names belong to later designs: the Farr 525 DS at 15.97 metres and the Farr 645 at 19.4 metres from 2001, and the Farr 585 at 17.95 metres from 2002, which stays in the list until 2012, longer than any other. None reach the most recent build years.
A pilothouse yacht of this size is a serious piece of engineering and wants an owner who keeps on top of its systems. On a used Farr, ask for the rigging history first: a cutter rig has more wires and fittings, and the standing rigging on a yacht that has crossed oceans may be due for renewal. Generators, watermakers, hydraulics and electrics deserve a professional look, as does the rudder bearing on a boat of fifteen metres and more. Pilothouse windows are large and their seals age, so check the saloon for signs of leaks. A full survey with a sea trial is the norm at this level.
