The Ixylon is a sailing dinghy with East Berlin roots. Ulrich Czerwonka designed it in 1969 for the Yachtwerft Berlin in the GDR, and production began in 1970. BBG Bootsbau Berlin built it later, and today BTM Marine Wassersport GmbH makes it in Bitterfeld. The giveaway is the pair of centreboards: with no centreboard case in the middle of the boat, the cockpit stays open, 2.30 by 1.10 metres. The glassfibre hull is moulded as a double shell and measures 5.10 by 1.80 metres, and the sloop rig sets 12.5 to 14.3 square metres depending on version. The Ixylon is a national one-design class of the German Sailing Association, with national championships sailed since 1974 and its own class association.

The Ixylon Fun arrived in 2008, the Ixylon Family and Ixylon Regatta in 2009, and these three run into the most recent build years. The Family is meant for newcomers and families, the Fun for relaxed sailing, and the Regatta comes with laminate sails, genoa and spinnaker. Two people make the usual crew. Since hull and length match across the range, a buyer of a used boat learns most about it from the sails and the deck hardware it carries.

With a double-shell hull, the first thing to check on a used Ixylon is whether water has found its way between the skins, so weigh the boat if you can and listen for soft spots. The two centreboards and their slots take knocks on every launch and want a look for chips and play. Laminate sails age faster than cloth ones when stored folded and damp. Most Ixylons spend their lives on road trailers, so wheel bearings, lights and the bow support deserve attention too. The class is active, which keeps spare parts and advice within easy reach and makes it easy to try racing at club level.
