Buizen Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Buizen is an Australian yard in Terrey Hills, north of Sydney. It was built up by the brothers Eddy and Fritz Buizen, who became known for hand built cruising yachts tailored to each owner. Steve Howe has run the yard since 2005. The boats are built in GRP, and the Buizen 52 has a resin infused vinylester hull drawn by Peter Lowe. The pilothouse is what sets the brand apart. Eddy Buizen wanted a cruising yacht where you move between cockpit and saloon on one level and keep sight of the outside world from inside. On the Buizen 48 a wraparound windscreen gives a view of 180 degrees. The yard's range takes in the Buizen 40, 48, 52 and 60, all made for long passages across open water.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing yachts. The Buizen 48 is recorded from 1987 to 2015, the smallest of the three at 14.6 metres and the line with the longest run. The Buizen 52 and Buizen 60 joined in 2009 and appear until 2015, the 52 at 15.85 metres and the 60 at 18.29 metres. None of the three lines reaches into recent build years. Every boat on the list is over 14 metres, and the smaller Buizen 40 is not in our records. Here, then, Buizen stands for large cruising yachts.
A Buizen bought second hand has often already crossed an ocean or two, which is both a recommendation and a reason to look closely. Ask for the rigging history, because standing rigging on a bluewater yacht ages with miles as much as with years. The big pilothouse windows need sound seals and frames; any staining around them is worth investigating. Check the systems that make long passages comfortable, such as watermaker, generator, autopilot and battery bank, and ask how old each one is. A boat of this size usually comes with a long equipment list, so match what is on paper with what is actually aboard.
