CABO Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Cabo Yachts was founded in 1991 by Henry Mohrschladt and Mike Howarth in Adelanto, California, first trading as Cat Harbor Boats. Both men brought glassfibre experience from building Pacific Seacraft sailing yachts. Cabo built inboard sportfishing boats in two forms: the express, with an open cockpit and the helm on the main deck, and the flybridge, with an upper steering station. Its first major model was the Cabo 35 Flybridge. Brunswick bought the brand in 2006 and placed it alongside Hatteras; in 2010 production moved from California to New Bern, North Carolina, sharing facilities with Hatteras. Regular production ended in 2013, and later owners briefly revived the name with the Cabo 41 Express.

Our model records list four designs, all motor yachts and all from the period after the takeover. The Cabo 36 Express at 11.77 metres, the 38 Flybridge at 12.44 metres and the 52 Flybridge at 15.88 metres are recorded from 2007 to 2014. The 44 HTX, 14.51 metres long, starts in 2008 and runs in the records to 2016. The names show the two layouts: two flybridge boats, one express and, in the HTX, an express with a hardtop. None of the lines reaches into the most recent build years. All four measure between 11.77 and 15.88 metres.

A sportfisher is built to run hard and far, and a used one shows how it has been treated. Start with the engines: ask for service records, oil analyses and hours, and have a marine engineer check the shafts, struts and cooling systems. Look at the cockpit sole, the fish boxes and the transom door for cracks or water ingress, and at the tower and outrigger mounts, which carry high loads. Fuel tanks and lines deserve attention on any boat of this age. Many Cabos have been fished in warm saltwater, so corrosion around fittings and electrics is worth a close look during a survey and sea trial.
