Cantiere Navale Camuffo; cover, cost and conditions
Camuffo traces its roots to 1438 and the Venetian colony of Candia, today Heraklion on Crete. After the fall of Constantinople the family moved to Chioggia in the lagoon, and until 1811 its caulkers and shipwrights worked at the Venetian Arsenal. In 1840 the yard settled in Portogruaro, east of Venice, and turned to wooden motor yachts. During the 1950s Marco Camuffo introduced a hardened, super-laminated marine wood that became the house material for hulls. Eighteen generations of the family ran the business, and the boats earned the nickname Stradivari of the Sea. The yard closed in 2025 under Giacomo Camuffo.
Our model records hold five designs, every one a flybridge motor yacht, which is what the FB suffix stands for. The C 40 FB is the smallest at just under 12 metres, followed by the C 44 FB at 13.3, the C 50 FB at 15 and the C 55 FB at 16.6 metres. The largest is the C 18m FB at 18.1 metres, its length written into the name. It appears from 1992, the other four from 1993, and all five end in 2000, so no line reaches the recent build years. Three of the five measure 15 metres or more, and the youngest boats are now over a quarter of a century old.
A wooden yacht of this age rewards an owner who stays on top of varnish, seams and deck fittings. Laminated wood is stable, yet water that creeps past a stanchion base, a window frame or the flybridge sole can still lift the finish and soften the timber beneath. A survey of a used Camuffo should include moisture readings around deck hardware, the transom and the engine beds, plus a close look at shafts, rudders and stern gear. Engines on yachts of 15 metres and more deserve a service history going back years. Interiors in these boats are largely joinery, so damp in the bilge or behind panels is worth chasing early.
