The Piantoni yard opened in 1906 in Predore, in the province of Bergamo, on the shore of Lake Iseo in northern Italy. It started out as Cantiere Piantoni Pietro e Figli and later became Cantiere Navale F.lli Piantoni, the yard of the Piantoni brothers. From the sixties to the early nineties it was busy building motorboats and small cruisers, first in wood. Later the yard turned to open and flybridge yachts in glassfibre. Names from that period include the Ondazzurra in open and fly versions, the Fantasy 45, the Harmony 42 and the Evolution 39, all part of the long boatbuilding tradition around the lake.
Our model records list three designs: two motor yachts and one motorboat. The oldest is the Weekender, a seven metre motorboat built from 1966 to 1972. The Onda Azzurra followed from 1982 to 1989 at 9.35 metres. The most recent line is the Evolution 39 Fly, built from 1990 to 1997 and at 11.85 metres the largest of the three. None of them reaches into recent build years, and together the records span a little over three decades. Each design belongs to a different chapter of the yard, from the small weekend boat to the flybridge yacht.
A Weekender from the sixties may still have a wooden hull, and that changes everything about its care. Wood wants to stay wet below the waterline and dry above it, so lake boats are often kept in a boathouse rather than left out in the sun. Later glassfibre models are simpler, but their teak, windscreens and original engines show their age. A buyer should look for soft spots in the deck, check the engine bed and ask how the boat spent its winters. Many of these boats have stayed on the Italian lakes all their lives.
