Cantieri Estensi; cover, cost and conditions

Cantieri Estensi was founded in Ferrara in 1995 and builds its boats at Ostellato in the same province of north-eastern Italy. The yard looks to the yachting traditions of the American East Coast, to the working boats and lobster yachts of Maine, and gives them an Italian accent. The Goldstar line consists of lobster-style boats built in composite. A new production site opened in 2009, and the downturn that followed brought the company into difficulty. Ownership changed in 2015, and since then the Garlini family has run the yard. The current range is split into the Goldstar, Maine and Targa lines, and the Down East profile with its upright bow and long, low superstructure is still the easiest way to recognise an Estensi.

Our model records list six designs, all classed as motor yachts and split evenly between the Goldstar and Bluetime lines. The Goldstar 360 and Goldstar 540 are the oldest, starting in 2003, followed by the Bluetime F300 and F370 in 2004, the Estensi 480 Goldstar S in 2007 and the Estensi 370 Bluetime in 2013. Every entry ends between 2015 and 2018, so none reaches the most recent build years. The Bluetime F300 is the smallest at 9.3 metres, the Goldstar 540 the largest at 16.65 metres. Three designs sit close together between 11.5 and 12 metres, and the 480 Goldstar S measures 14.85 metres. The newer Maine and Targa lines do not yet appear in our records.

A lobster-style yacht from this period is usually bought second hand. A survey should look closely at the joinery and at varnished or teak surfaces, which take time to bring back once the finish has broken down. On the older Goldstar boats the drive train and engine beds deserve attention, as do the seals of the large windscreens and side windows. Many of these yachts spend their summers on Adriatic or Tyrrhenian moorings, so a moisture check of the hull and a clear record of antifouling work belong to any purchase. Ask for the hull number and build year in writing, because the line names were used across several sizes.
