Cantieri Navali Arturo Stabile; cover, cost and conditions

The Stabile family has been building and looking after boats since 1875, always in Trapani on the western tip of Sicily. For a long time the business served commercial fishermen; leisure boating grew into a second pillar, and today Cantieri Navali Arturo Stabile builds sports cruisers and motor yachts under the Stama name and runs the Marina Arturo Stabile in Trapani. The lines are drawn by Tommaso Spadolini, working with Maurizio Stabile from the family. A Stama reads as a sporty Mediterranean cruiser, offered depending on the model as an open Day boat, an Open or with a fixed hard top.

Our model records list eight designs, all motor yachts. The range opens with the Stama 28 Day at 8.35 metres, listed from 1998. The Stama 33 and Stama 37 Day followed in 2002, the 37 Hard Top in 2003, the 37 Open in 2007, and the 33 Hard Top and Stama 43, at 13.1 metres, in 2008. The Stama 50 appears from 2013 and is the largest boat from the yard at 16.2 metres. Seven of the eight designs reach into the most recent build years; only the 37 Day ends, in 2012. The two 33s measure 11.07 metres and the three 37s around 11.9 metres, so five of the eight yachts sit between eleven and twelve metres.

A Stama is built for Mediterranean coastal hops, which means sun, salt and plenty of manoeuvring in tight harbours. On a used boat, check the shaft seals and engine hours, the condition of the teak and the hard top seals, which can let water into the wiring if neglected. Air conditioning and generators, where fitted, need a service history of their own. Gelcoat on the hull sides tells the story of past moorings stern to; scuffs are cosmetic, cracks around cleats and fairleads are not. A survey out of the water is worth the effort on the 43 and 50.
