Cantieri Navali Lavagna s.r.l.; cover, cost and conditions

Cantieri Navali Lavagna dates from the 1950s and takes its name from Lavagna on the Ligurian coast, some 40 kilometres from Genoa. In its first years the yard built wooden boats sold as President and Arcobaleno Super. In 1966 it launched the Admiral name, which carried it into the world of large motor yachts. A turning point came in 1982 with the Boule Dogue, a 23.50 metre yacht with an aluminium hull that opened the era of metal construction in Lavagna. In 2011 the Italian Sea Group bought the company together with the rights to the Admiral brand, which has continued under the new owner since then.

Our model records list 29 designs, all of them motor yachts, built between 1966 and 2015. The oldest entries are the Admiral 700, the Admiral 18 S and the Admiral 21, all from 1966. The Admiral 32 has the longest run, from 1968 to 2012. Between 2009 and 2014 came the Impero, Maxima, Regale and X Lence lines, 14 designs from 33.65 to 59.6 metres, with the Admiral Impero 60 as the largest vessel on the list. Our records also file the Chibli 24 and 27 and the Challenger 85 under this name. The smallest yacht is the Admiral 700 at 15.3 metres. Twenty designs measure 30 metres or more, ten of them 40 metres or more. No line reaches the most recent build years; the last entries end in 2015.

A yacht from this yard is a project rather than a weekend toy. The early Admirals come from the wooden era, so a buyer needs a surveyor who knows timber, fastenings and the effect of decades of Mediterranean sun. Later vessels built in metal raise other questions: coating condition, electrolysis around underwater fittings and the state of tanks and bilges. At 30 metres and more, engines, generators and stabilisers carry as much weight in a survey as the hull. Most of these yachts are run by a professional crew, and logbooks, class records and refit invoices show how carefully a vessel has been looked after.
