Cheoy Lee is a Hong Kong yard whose history reaches back to 1870. The head office and a small repair yard remain in Kowloon, while building now takes place at the site in Zhuhai on the Chinese mainland, about 70 kilometres west of Hong Kong. Separate halls for steel, aluminium and fibreglass stand side by side there, which lets the yard build in all three materials. The newer yachts are recognisable by the high unbroken topsides and the deckhouse carried well forward; the seventies classics by teak decks, timber superstructures and a long overhang aft.

Our model records list 97 Cheoy Lee models, 65 of them motor yachts, 27 sailing yachts, four motorsailers and one motorboat. Build years start in 1967 and run into current production. Sixty series are recorded: the Explorer models from 107 to 132 feet, the Bravo and Alpha ranges, the Serenity models and harbour and workboat craft from 14 to 21 metres. Lengths run from 8.5 to 46.1 metres, with half the models between 14 and 26.5 metres, an unusually wide span for a single yard.

That span is the point worth understanding about the brand. A 1970s ketch with a timber superstructure and a 40 metre steel explorer share a builder and almost nothing else: different materials, different crews, different ocean. On the older boats the condition of the deck and the joinery tells more than the build year does, while on the large hulls it is the machinery, the tender and the range that define the boat.
