The Cantiere Navale di Chiavari stood on the eastern Riviera of Liguria, in the town that gave it its name. Active from the nineteenth century into the 1970s, the yard became known for wooden motor yachts built with double planking, two layers of planks laid across each other. Names such as Corvetta, Paraggina and Barbagatto come from its lists, and the Porto Cervo 22 was presented at the Genoa boat show in 1972. A Chiavari yacht is recognisable by its classic lines, plenty of varnished wood and superstructures in the Riviera style of the period. Today these boats are collectors' pieces.
Our model records list four designs: three motor yachts and one sailing yacht. The Porto Cervo, the Riviera 71 and the Riviera S are recorded for build years 1968 to 1976. The Riviera 71 is the smallest of them at 16.7 metres, the Riviera S measures 18.6 metres, and the Porto Cervo is the largest in the list at 21.4 metres. The Free Sail 18 stands apart, an 18.4 metre sailing yacht listed from 1975 to 1982. None of the lines reaches recent build years, and all four exceed 16 metres, dating from the late period of the yard.
Owning a double-planked yacht from the sixties means living with wood. Fastenings, caulking and the bond between the two planking layers need regular inspection, and long dry spells ashore can open seams. A survey by someone who knows traditional Italian construction is essential before buying, ideally with the boat out of the water. Look at the history of any restoration, the condition of the engines and shafts, and whether original fittings have survived. On the Free Sail 18, the age of the rig and the state of the chainplates deserve particular attention.
