Comisa; cover, cost and conditions
Cantieri Comisa is an Italian yard in Gianico, in the province of Brescia, a long way from the sea. Work began in 1981 with boats of 22 and 23 feet, or 7.30 and 7.80 metres, built for anglers and powered by diesel engines without exception. That line has stayed: Comisa builds deep V hulls whose waterlines are meant to run fast and steady in rough water, and it sticks to diesel throughout. After more than a decade in the fishing market a larger hull followed, the 9.40 metre Lipari 31, shown at the Genoa boat show with twin turbo diesels and counter rotating propellers. A strong V bow marks out a Lipari.
Our model records list three designs from the Lipari range, all with build years from 1990 to 1998. The Lipari 22 is entered as a motorboat of 7.35 metres, the Lipari 23 as a motor yacht of 7.8 metres and the Lipari 29 as a motor yacht of 8.85 metres. The 22 and 23 are thus close in length to the boats the yard started with. According to the boating press the Lipari line comprised four models between 7.5 and 9.4 metres; the Lipari 31 is not in our data. None of the listed designs reaches into the most recent build years, and the youngest boats are now nearly thirty years old and change hands on the used market.
An older diesel boat is all about the engine room. Ask for the service history, look for oil and coolant leaks, and check the exhaust elbow and raw water pump, which wear on every marine diesel. On a deep V hull, inspect the keel and the spray rails for cracks from hard landings in a seaway. Fuel tanks from the nineties may have collected water and sludge, so a sample from the bottom of the tank tells a lot. Comisa has its roots in angling boats, so look for rod holder mounts and old fittings that have let water into the deck core.
