Dacapo Boats A/S; cover, cost and conditions

Dacapo comes from Norway. The local history wiki for Grimstad on the south coast records the boatbuilding works at Birketvedt, which started in 1986. Kjell Rasmussen drew the boats, while boatbuilder Hans Olav Jørgensen made the plug and the moulds. The first major model was the Dacapo 9000, a 29 foot semi-planing day cruiser with an aft cabin as standard, offered open, with a hard top and as a cabin cruiser. The hulls are glassfibre. A Danish dealer took boats from early on. In March 1998 a fire broke out in the workshop, and a neighbour who served as a firefighter stopped it from spreading. The boats are easy to recognise: a compact hull, an aft cabin and a generous cockpit, a layout for families who sleep aboard.

Our model records list four designs, three motor yachts and one motorboat, built between 1986 and 2004. First comes the Dacapo 9000 at 9 metres, recorded from 1986 to 2001. The Dacapo 750 motorboat at 7.48 metres joined in 1990 and also ran until 2001. From 1997 the Dacapo 950 at 9.3 metres followed in two versions, the 950 HTS until 2004 and the 950 VS/HT until 2003. None of the designs reaches into recent build years, and the youngest boats in our data date from 2004. Lengths stay between 7.5 and 9.3 metres, so the range kept to handy boats for skerries, fjords and coastal water. A Dacapo found for sale today will be somewhere between twenty and forty years old.

Semi-planing boats of this age reward a careful survey. Check the engine hours and service history, look at the engine beds and the shaft or drive installation, and make sure the cooling system has been kept clean. Hard tops and cabin windows can leak after decades of Scandinavian winters, so look for water stains in the aft cabin and under the hard top. Rocky skerry coasts mean the occasional knock, so inspect the keel and the lower hull for repaired scrapes. If the boat comes from Norway or Denmark, ask for the original papers and the import documents if the boat has crossed a border. A well kept 9000 or 950 remains a practical family boat.
