De Steven B.V.; cover, cost and conditions

This name covers the older motor yachts of the Smelne range from Drachten in Friesland. It comes from the De Steven works, to which production moved in 1979. What was built there were steel displacement yachts for inland water and sheltered coast, in small numbers and with clear differences from boat to boat, because each yacht was fitted out to its first owner's wishes. You recognise them by the curved steel hull with its soft sheer, the heavy rubbing strake and the wheelhouse with its large upright windows.

Our model records list 44 models under this name, all of them motor yachts. Recorded build years run from 1973 to 2010. Forty four series are recorded: the Smelne 1000 and 10.50; the 1040 in the AK, DL and OP versions; the 1060 and 1160 Ambassador; the 1140 as AK and OP; the 1180 S; the 1240 AK; the 1250, 1350 and 1450 as OP; the 1450 OK; and the 1480 Salon. Alongside them stand the Slingshot 40 and 44, each in steel and in aluminium. The number gives the length in centimetres. Lengths run from 10 to 15 metres, half the models between 11.4 and 13.4 metres.

Two things follow from a yard that built in small numbers to order. The model name says less about a particular boat than it would on a production line, because the fitting out differed from hull to hull. And the material rules the rest: steel rusts where its protection is broken, by preference where nobody looks, so plate thickness readings tell more than a year of build does.
