De Volharding B.V.; cover, cost and conditions

Scheepswerf De Volharding sits in Stavoren, a small harbour town on the IJsselmeer in the Dutch province of Friesland, and dates back to 1795. From the late sixties the yard built the Staverse Kotter. In 1995 the Sturier 400 OC introduced the name by which the yard is known today, and since then De Volharding has turned out motor yachts of roughly 40 to 70 feet, each one built by hand and adapted to its owner. One Sturier Ocean Cruiser 620 from 2012 is described as a steel yacht, with exterior, naval architecture and interior all by the yard itself. The letters OC in a model name stand for Ocean Cruiser; alongside them come the CS models and the newer DM and DME types.

Our model records list 22 designs: 16 motor yachts and six sailing yachts. The line starts in 1972 with the Küstenfischer, followed by five versions of the Staverse Kotter from the 910 to the 1500, the Sportküstenfischer and the Old American-Cutter. The largest group is formed by twelve Sturier motor yachts from the 500 CS to the DME 8, joined by the Sturier Kotter 1200 under sail and the Dutchman 60. Nine Sturier designs reach into the most recent build years, among them the 520 OC, listed since 1998. Lengths run from 9.2 metres for the Staverse Kotter 910 to 23.98 metres for the Sturier DME 8. Thirteen designs measure 15 metres or more, and three exceed 20 metres: the 675 CS, DME 7 and DME 8.

Where a yacht is built in steel, as the 2012 Ocean Cruiser 620 is described, corrosion is the first thing to watch. On a used Sturier or Staverse Kotter, ask for recent hull thickness readings, look at the paint along the waterline and in the bilges, and check the anodes and their bonding. Because every boat was finished to its first owner's wishes, the inventory varies a great deal, so the installed systems, from generators to stabilisers where fitted, should be listed and tested one by one. Yachts of this kind often travel long distances through inland waterways and along the coast, which makes the engine log and service history worth reading closely.
