Worth knowing
Gallart; cover, cost and conditions
Astilleros Gallart began in Mataró, a coastal town near Barcelona. The yard first made its name with motor yachts under its own badge and later added racing sailing boats. It shipped its first yacht to the United States in 1957, and in 1960 it was among the first Spanish yards to experiment with glassfibre. In 1966 Gallart Shipyard SA and Astler Ibiza SL merged into Astilleros Reunidos SA, known as ARESA, which from the late seventies also built commercial, military and patrol craft. Most Gallart yachts carry their length in the name, such as 10,50, 13,50 or 17,50, followed by letters like MP or MY.
Our model records list five Gallart designs: four motor yachts and one sailing yacht. The oldest line is the Gallart 13,50 MP, built from 1973 to 1992, while the Gallart 10,50 MP at 10.5 metres runs from 1974 to 1995 and lasts the longest. The Gallart 13,50 MS, listed in our records as a sailing yacht of 13.4 metres, spans 1975 to 1992. The Gallart 17,50 MY is the largest at 17.5 metres and dates from 1981 to 1991, and the Gallart 45 at 12.98 metres from 1983 to 1989. No design reaches the recent build years; the list closes in 1995. Three of the five yachts measure 13 metres or more.
Every Gallart afloat today is at least thirty years old, and the first job for a buyer is to separate sound structure from tired finish. Glassfibre hulls of this age deserve a moisture check and a close look at the bonding of bulkheads and stringers. Engines and shafts are often the most expensive part of an older motor yacht, so ask for the service history and the running hours, and have the shaft seals, bearings and exhaust elbows inspected. Fuel and water tanks of this vintage may need replacing. A yacht kept for years in the Mediterranean sun often shows its age in the windows, hatches and upholstery. A sea trial at cruising speed tells more than any listing.
