Gibson Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Gibson Boats was founded in Tennessee in 1968 by William C. Brummett. The yard built a hybrid of houseboat and cabin cruiser: living space on the scale of a houseboat, with a hull that handles like a cruiser. The boats have a modified V hull in fibreglass and were built to be saltwater ready, which opened up the Intracoastal Waterway along the American East Coast to their owners. After a tornado destroyed the plant in Goodlettsville in 2006, a new factory went up in Portland, Tennessee. The recession that began in 2008 hit the company hard, and it closed in 2013. In 2017 the Cawthorne family bought the rights and restarted production in South Dakota. The long, boxy superstructure of a houseboat is the giveaway.
Our model records list six designs, all motor yachts and all with build years from 2007 to 2012. The two smallest are the Gibson 44' Classic and the Gibson 44' SS at 13.41 metres each. Next come the 50' Cabin Yacht at 15.24 metres and the 55' LS Series at 16.79 metres, and the largest are the Gibson 5900 LS and 5900 WB SS at 17.98 metres each. That spans the 44 to 59 feet the sources mention. None of the designs reaches the most recent build years: the entries stop at 2012, shortly before production in Tennessee came to an end.
A houseboat yacht of this size is a floating home, and a buyer should inspect it like one. Check generator hours, air conditioning units, freshwater and holding tank systems and the condition of the upper deck, where water can find its way into the structure. The modified V hull should be surveyed out of the water, with attention to the running gear and the transom area. Boats used in salt water need a careful look at metal fittings and wiring. Since the original factory closed in 2013, records and parts often come through owners' groups and the revived company in South Dakota.
