Gibson is a Tennessee name. According to the houseboat press, William C. Brummett started the company in 1968, and the US Coast Guard's manufacturer register gives its address as Goodlettsville. The yard built glassfibre houseboats that sit somewhere between a floating holiday home and a cabin cruiser: a glassfibre hull with a tall superstructure and plenty of living space aboard. Gibsons are still a common sight in American houseboat marinas. A tornado destroyed the works in 2006, and building moved to a new plant in Portland, Tennessee. The company closed in 2013, and a family later acquired the rights to the name and the boats.

A houseboat lives a different life from a sports cruiser. Hours on the engines are often low, while the hull spends long months on a mooring, so osmosis checks on the glassfibre and the state of the underwater fittings matter more than the hour meter. The large superstructure needs sound window seals and a watertight roof deck, and soft spots in the upper deck are worth tapping out on any survey.
