Holterman & De Vries; cover, cost and conditions
Holterman & De Vries is a Dutch yard. It began in 1966, when J. Holterman and his partner De Vries started building boats in Wanneperveen in Overijssel, and later moved to larger premises in Meppel. The yard builds steel motor yachts drawn by J. Holterman himself, meant for inland waterways as well as larger open waters. Alongside the Holterman name, part of the output carried the name Blauwe Hand, Dutch for blue hand. These cruisers are recognised by their heavy steel hulls and by interiors full of drawers and lockers, with rounded shapes and careful proportions.
Our model records list four designs, all motor yachts and all under the Blauwe Hand name. The earliest is the Blauwe Hand 900 at nine metres, built from 1970 to 1980. The Blauwe Hand Kruiser 1050 follows at 10.5 metres with build years from 1972 to 1979. Two larger boats arrive in the eighties: the Blauwe Hand Trawler at 12.5 metres from 1980 to 1989 and the Blauwe Hand Kruiser at 12.8 metres from 1986 to 1992. None of the four reaches into recent production, and lengths range from nine metres to just under 13.
A steel cruiser of this age lives or dies by the state of its plating. On a used Blauwe Hand a hull thickness survey with an ultrasonic gauge is the first step, followed by a look at the areas where water collects: under floorboards, around the engine room and behind built in furniture. Anodes, paint system and the stern tube deserve attention at every haul out. Most of these boats spend their lives on canals, rivers and lakes, where locks and bridges set the pace, and a well kept example can easily handle a summer on the IJsselmeer.
