Ice Marine Limited; cover, cost and conditions
Ice Marine works from a yard at the mouth of the Hamble near Southampton, a short run from the Solent and the Channel. Jeremy Watts founded the company in 1995 with a group of offshore racing people that included the naval architect Lorne Campbell. Watts had just won a powerboat championship that year and went looking for a better hull. Campbell proposed a trimaran, and after two years of development and testing the moulds for the Bladerunner 34 were started in 1997. What sets the boat apart is underneath: all hydrodynamic lift comes from the centre hull, two sponsons provide stability, and the wings between them add aerodynamic lift at speed. The yard calls this the AEM hull form.
Our model records hold three designs, all listed as motor yachts and all 10.6 metres long: the Bladerunner 34 GT, the Bladerunner 34 GT4 and the Bladerunner 34 Sport. In other words, one line in three versions on the same hull. The GT and the Sport start in 1998, the GT4 a year later. The GT and GT4 end in 2005, while the Sport runs on to 2006, giving nine build years in all. None of the three reaches the most recent build years, so every Bladerunner 34 on the market today is a used boat of around twenty years.
A stabilised monohull asks for a careful eye on the parts a normal planing boat does not have. Sponsons and wing sections take the brunt of floating debris and hard landings, so their joints to the centre hull deserve a close look on any survey. Fast boats of this age often carry engines that have been rebuilt or replaced; service records and hours matter as much as the hull. The Sport, GT and GT4 differ in layout and deck rather than in hull, which makes comparing boats across the three versions straightforward. A trial run at speed tells more about trim and handling than any brochure.
