Yachtwerft Lütje is based in Hamburg. The yard became known for motor yachts in the style of earlier decades, designed by the Bremerhaven office Judel, Vrolijk & Co.; besides the Classic Coaster range it also built the Elbe 33 and the Georgia 50. Under the classic skin the construction is modern: a Classic Coaster 38, for instance, has a hull of GRP sandwich with epoxy resin, varnished in dark green, and a superstructure of marine plywood sheathed in GRP and painted white. The older models under the Lütje name, motor and sailing yachts of twelve to 18 metres, go back to the late sixties in our data. A Classic Coaster looks the way its name suggests: a dark hull, a light deckhouse and plenty of varnished wood, drawn after the coastal boats of earlier times.

Our model records list 21 designs: 16 motor yachts and five sailing yachts. The oldest entry is the Senator 13,50, built from 1967 to 1978, and the latest records end in 2012; no line runs into the most recent build years. Nine designs belong to the Classic Coaster range, from the Classic Coaster 30 Open and 30 Sport at 9.2 metres through the 35 Center Console and 35 Sport, the 37, 40 Sport and 43 up to the 48 at 14.8 metres, most of them listed from 2002 to 2012. Under the Lütje name appear the sailing yachts Lütje 41, 48, 52, 60 and 60 S and motor yachts such as the Lütje 15,60, the M 43, M 46 and the Lütje 60 M, at 18 metres the largest design. Fourteen measure twelve metres or more.

Varnish and wood are the soul of a Classic Coaster, and they need attention every season. On a used boat, look at the varnish on rails, window frames and doors, and check the plywood superstructure for soft spots where water may have crept under the sheathing. The epoxy sandwich hull is sound in principle, but any damage should be repaired properly so that no moisture enters the core. The older Lütje sailing yachts from the seventies and eighties want a careful look at chainplates, rig and keel bolts. Many of these boats cruise the Elbe, the Baltic and the North Sea, where drying out on the tide is part of the game.
