Luhrs is a name with deep roots in American boating. It goes back to the Henry Luhrs Sea Skiff Company in Morgan, New Jersey, which Henry's sons John and Warren Luhrs grew into a group of yards. The Luhrs Marine Group came to include the sailboat builder Hunter, the Mainship trawlers and, from 1986, fishing boats sold under the Luhrs name and built in St. Augustine, Florida. A plant there opened in 1987 and a second one followed in Midway, Georgia, in 1999. In April 2012 the group filed for Chapter 11, and the brands were sold off one by one. The boats follow the classic American sportfish line: open cockpit aft for fighting fish, a raised deckhouse or bridge above it and a tall bow.
Our model records list eight Luhrs designs, all classed as motor yachts and all from 2006 to 2015. The smallest is the Luhrs 28 Open at 9.7 metres, followed by the 31 IPS Open at 10.47 metres and the 35 Convertible at 11.8 metres; these three run to 2015. At 37 feet there are two drive options, the 37 IPS at 11.84 metres and the 37 Outboard at 12.4 metres. At the top sits the 41 in three versions, Convertible, Hardtop and Open, each 13.56 metres long. The 37 and 41 models end in our records in 2012. None of the designs reaches into the latest build years, so every Luhrs on the market today is a used boat.
A sportfisher works hard. Fish boxes, livewells, rod holders and outriggers all go through the deck or the hull sides, and each of those openings is worth checking for soft core and seeping water. On the IPS boats the pod drives need regular service, and their history should be on paper. Inboard boats deserve a look at shafts, cutless bearings and engine hours on both sides. Many of these boats were built for the American market and have been imported, so electrical systems, paperwork and the condition of the bridge and tower after years in strong sun are part of a careful inspection. Typical use is offshore day trips to the fishing grounds.
