Sumerset Houseboats comes from Somerset, Kentucky. Jim Sharpe built his first houseboat there in 1953, ten by 24 feet, with a steel bottom and a scow bow. Together with Stardust the company is credited with creating the lake style houseboat, the wide floating home for American reservoirs and rivers. The name has its own story: in 1973 a printer turned Somerset into Sumerset on a flyer, and Sharpe decided he liked the u better. He sold his shares in 1996. After later owners had shut production down, Thoroughbred Houseboats bought the name and patents in 2010 and started building again, and four years later joined forces with Stardust under Trifecta Ventures.
