Selene builds trawlers and explorers in China and has established itself in Europe as a cruising vessel, in sizes from fifteen to twenty-four metres. For underwriting, the place of construction is irrelevant, and what matters are the type of boat, the value, the year of construction and the cruising range. Where the place of construction does play a role is the question of spare parts: expect longer delivery times for repairs and raise the question of loss of use before taking out the policy.
These vessels are often bought second-hand in Europe, after delivery from Asia or as a used purchase in the Mediterranean. The purchase price of a second-hand purchase is not automatically the correct sum insured. What matters is what an equivalent vessel costs today, and that can be considerably higher.
A trawler covers long legs with a small crew. Legal expenses cover for water sports is excluded by most providers, but not with us: a dispute with the shipyard after a refit or with the previous owner after the purchase are exactly the cases for which a cruising vessel needs cover.
