Sabre / Back Cove; cover, cost and conditions

Sabre and Back Cove build motor yachts between 9 and 15 metres in Maine in the Downeast tradition, slender hulls with a classic line, inboard diesels, designed for calm passages and range. These are yachts for people who cruise instead of planing, and that measurably reduces the hull risk.

On Downeast yachts the drivetrain is where damage concentrates: shaft installation, stern tube, propeller. Grounding or a foreign object in the propeller bends the shaft and damages the stern gland, and then water comes in. Full hull cover covers grounding including consequential damage and sinking; limited hull cover covers neither of the two. On a yacht with a shaft installation, full hull cover is the sensible standard.

What this means for the cover

For the Sabre 34 / 38 Segelyacht (classic) by Sabre / Back Cove series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

As the Back Cove 32 / 37 and Sabre 45 / 48 Salon Express by Sabre / Back Cove series are still in

production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Sabre 34 / 38 Segelyacht (classic) by Sabre / Back Cove series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

For the Back Cove 32 / 37, Sabre 45 / 48 Salon Express by Sabre / Back Cove series:

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.

Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
