3C Composites is a French yard that built a sporty keelboat of just under ten metres under the Bongo name. The design is by Pierre Rolland. The Bongo 9.60, also sold as the Bongo 32, is a light fractional sloop with a bulbed fin keel and twin rudders. She was drawn for fast sailing with a small crew, and in enough breeze the hull is meant to plane. A twin keel version was offered for shallow waters. The Bongo is easy to pick out: a beam of about 3.7 metres, generous for her length, a flat and wide stern carrying the two rudders, and a draft of nearly two metres on the fin keel version.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts of 9.6 metres: the Bongo 9.60 with build years 1999 to 2008 and the Bongo 960 from 1999 to 2009. Length and build period match almost exactly, and the source knows only one Bongo 9.60, so the two spellings very probably refer to the same yacht. Neither line reaches the most recent build years. One reference directory gives a shorter production run of 2002 to 2005. For any single boat, the build year in its own papers is what counts. The range at 3C Composites is therefore about as narrow as it gets: one hull, two keel options.
A light planing keelboat lives or dies by its weight and its foils. On a used Bongo, look closely at the keel joint and the bulb for signs of a hard grounding, and check both rudder bearings for play, since twin rudders double the number of parts that wear. A boat that has been raced hard may show stress around the chainplates and the mast step. Sails are part of the story: ask how old the racing wardrobe is and whether a cruising set comes with the boat. The twin keel version suits drying harbours and shallow lakes; the fin keel boat is the one for windy club racing.
